Red Ribbon Week Event Planning Idea Blog: Large Print

David T. Wilson Elementary School in Brandenburg, Kentucky, held a Red Ribbon banner contest. Each class came up with a drug free slogan and designed a banner to represent it. Some outstanding slogans were generated, such as “Don’t Do Weed Or You Won’t Succeed” and “Don’t Huff, Don’t Puff, Don’t Do That Stuff.” The bus drivers served as judges. For your own contest, hang up a “PAWS-itively Drug Free” Red-Ribbon Shaped Banner as inspiration. Provide classes with large sheets of red butcher paper for making banners. To the winners, award “PAWS-itively Drug Free” Backpack Clip/Zipper Pulls and “Read My Lips, I’m PAWS-itively Drug Free” Lip Balm.

About Red Ribbon Week

This year marks the 21th anniversary of the first official celebration of Red Ribbon Week. The event has grown into the country’s largest anti-drug endeavor. Encouraging youngsters to turn away from drugs is still the main emphasis, but giving them the tools to make other healthy choices is now a component.

Red Ribbon Week came into existence as the result of the tragic death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1985. Friends and family in his hometown of Calexico, California, started a movement to honor him. Camarena Clubs were formed in which members pledged to live drug free. A red ribbon became the symbol of this fight against drug abuse. Parent associations in other areas joined the fight and adopted the red ribbon. In 1988, the U.S. Congress proclaimed Red Ribbon Week.

Positive Promotions holds a contest to find outstanding celebrations. In 2008, entries came in from 46 states, giving the judges a lot to think about. Here we summarize the winners’ programs. We also present ideas from the other entries to help you have your best Red Ribbon Week ever!
