Grand Prize - Piedmont Middle School Piedmont, Alabama

Piedmont Middle School planned its activities around the theme “One School, One Goal—Drug Free.” In Piedmont, the local school district provides MacBook computers to each student. The MacBooks were incorporated into Red Ribbon Week this year. Students used I-chat during homeroom to hold discussion forums about avoiding substance abuse. In language class, sixth and seventh graders researched and summarized the history of Red Ribbon Week using their MacBooks; eighth graders researched a drug each and made presentations to the class. Science students created wallpaper and screensavers for the MacBooks based on the “One School, One Goal” theme. A mini basketball from Positive Promotions was awarded at each grade level for the best wallpaper or screensaver. Social studies classes watched the movie “Natural High”; students then typed their “natural highs” on their MacBooks. The school produced its own video, an I-movie called “Dance.” Teachers, staff members, the school mascot, and administrators were brave enough to dance for the production; many of the “performers” wore “Our School Rocks Drug Free” T-shirts. Not everything was MacBook related; the girl’s basketball team played against the faculty, with the boy’s basketball team serving as coaches, referees, etc. Admission to the game was $1.00, which was donated to a charity.

San Jacinto Elementary School came up with the theme “iBelieve In Me…iAm Drug Free.” Each grade level started with a different activity. Kindergartners put tissue paper around an “award” ribbon and filled in “________ is drug free!” with their names. First graders heard a story about Kiki Camarena, then wrote summary essays. Second grade teachers made a large paper beehive that read, “iBelieve iWill Bee Drug Free;” students signed bees. On recipe cards, each third grader wrote a recipe for maintaining a drug free life. Fourth graders received paper iPhone cutouts and wrote text messages on them about staying drug free. Fifth graders designed their own bumper stickers that began with “iWill…”. Students wore red for “iKnow iAm ‘Red’y To Say No To Drugs.” They donned green for “iCan Keep My Mind And The Earth Clean.” Slippers were worn for “iWill Not Let Drugs Slip Up On Me!” Jeans and school spirit t-shirts were the attire for “iAm A ‘Jean’ius Because iAm Drug Free.” 1950s sock hop clothing showed “San Jacinto Elementary Rocks Drug Free.” Each day, students received gifts purchased from Positive Promotions, such as red ribbons, bookmarks, lollipops, and shaped-rubber wristbands. The school’s technology teacher created a video. In it, “private detectives” on “Mission Red Ribbon” investigated how the drug prevention week started. With the help of a group of students called the iTeam, they also uncovered information about drugs and how to resist them.

At Eli Terry Jr. Middle School, Red Ribbon Week began with a Red Ribbon Rally. The rally included cheerleaders, the eighth grade band, and the school choruses. A drug enforcement agent spoke to the audience about keeping dreams alive by staying drug free. Then T-shirts, bracelets, and other prizes were thrown into the stands. At the beginning of the week, the school sent home a letter encouraging parents to emphasize anti-drug messages. Each day a flyer was sent home to help parents discuss substance abuse. Students signed pledge sheets to show their commitment; the sheets were arranged into a giant ribbon shape and displayed in the cafeteria. The students also had the opportunity to enter an essay contest, focusing on myths associated with drugs and alcohol. The local police department and its drug-sniffing dog did a presentation, as did the local ambulance corps and the National Guard helicopter crew. Students from a neighboring arts magnet school performed skits and led a discussion. Science teachers conducted lessons on the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body and brain. Westwood Elementary School combined its drug prevention efforts with character education. The slogan “Being Drug Free Is My Responsibility” was the theme. Inspired by “Color My World Drug Free” products, Red Ribbon Week organizers sent home a worksheet for parents/ guardians to fill out. The sheet asked what their children were doing to color the world with character. The response was amazing; students were affirmed and encouraged by what the adults had to say. Westwood families gathered with families from five other schools to attend a community-wide event, a “Wrap The Town Red” ceremony. There, the mayor spoke, choirs sang, and cheerleaders led chants before the crowd dispersed to wrap red ribbons around town. Back at the school, each day the morning announcements featured information on healthy character choices, including being drug free. Tuesday, students focused on making footsteps worth following when they participated in group walking time, letting good character keep them on track. Wednesday, youth from Friendswood High School treated the elementary students to a “Character Is Our Anti-Drug” pep rally and handed out stickers from Positive Promotions. J.J. Wessendorff Middle School took on the issues of drugs and bullying. Red Ribbon Week organizers chose the theme “Let’s Make A Difference: I Can, You Can, And We Can.” The school made a difference to the local food bank by holding a canned food drive. Also, students decorated pumpkins to share with neighboring schools. The youngsters participated in a bullying-prevention seminar and created poems and illustrations on the topic; students with the best creations were awarded “Believe, Achieve, Succeed” silicone bracelets. Classes competed in a door-decorating contest, winning restaurant gift certificates. They also took part in quizzes about drug prevention and received dog tags for the most correct answers. Everyone in the school, including faculty and staff, received red satin ribbons and gold foil stickers. Dress-up days were held throughout the week. The class with the most participation won anti-drug skateboard key tags. On the last day, students wore masks and danced to “Thriller.”

The Red Ribbon Week activities at Rufus E. Payne Elementary School allowed teachers, staff, parents, and the community to become involved in the students’ pledge to be drug free. Teachers placed pieces of the “Celebrate A Drug Free Life” ribbon roll on all classroom doors. Each grade level created and signed giant paper banners, which were hung in the cafeteria. Students in kindergarten through second grade entered a drawing contest; students in third through fifth grades submitted essays. Winners of the two contests were awarded water bottles. To show that they “Stay On Track For Success—Drug Free,” children and adults wore team sports apparel. The entire school, as well as parents, dressed in red and marched through the streets of Jacksonville, calling attention to Red Ribbon Week. Later, students participated in math lessons that incorporated elements of the march. Teachers read books, articles, and poems to their classes that stressed the importance of keeping away from drugs. And the students completed writing assignments in response to the readings.

At Satsuma High School, more than 500 students signed a pledge against drugs. The pledge forms were hung up and lined the hallways. Classes decorated their doors with clever sayings and images. Each day, facts about drugs were read during the announcements. Students participated in poetry, essay, and poster contests. To express “Identify Me…Drug Free,” dog tags were sold on Monday. Students heard “Don’t Be A Dum-Dum, Be Drug Free” as they received dum-dum suckers on Tuesday. They wore anti-drug stickers on Wednesday to show “I’ll Stick To Being Drug Free.” Fuzzy wuzzies on Thursday reminded students to “Believe, Achieve, Succeed Drug Free.” On Friday, “Let Your True Colors Shine Drug Free” pencils helped students “get the point” about avoiding drugs. The FCCLA club showed off its exhibit titled, “If You Abuse, You Will Surely Lose To Prescription Drugs.” The exhibit won first place at the Gulf State Fair.

Central Elementary School wanted to increase students’ awareness of positive activities as well as teach how drugs and alcohol affect bodies and minds. Students received “I’ve Got Better Things To Do Than Drugs” ribbon stickers and were asked to write down their favorite activity; the top three activities mentioned were announced. Students also created posters on the subject and wore clothes from their favorite activity. The school counselor held up a fish bowl filled with water, telling students that the bowl represented a drug-free brain. She then added some dirt, which represented drugs or alcohol, so everyone could see how muddy the “brain” becomes. The youngsters were given tasks to complete while “impaired” by “substances.” They finished a relay race with heavy backpacks on, unwrapped candy while wearing large work gloves, ran with a tennis ball between their legs, and walked with a book on their heads.

The Red Ribbon Week organizers at Lone Hill Middle School in San Dimas, California, strove to make an impact on the student body. Fifteen sets of speakers visited the campus to share their experiences. Students moved in groups from speaker to speaker. Police officers and fire fighters spoke, as did former drug and alcohol abusers. DEA officers arrived in a helicopter to talk about seizing drugs that were being brought into the United States. High school athletes gave suggestions on avoiding drugs and alcohol that can ruin college dreams. Students were able to have meaningful discussions with the speakers that day. “Believe, Achieve, Succeed Drug Free” items, such as Laminated Tags and Temporary Tattoos, would complement a day of powerful speakers.

The Morgan County High School SADD club involved the community of West Liberty, Kentucky, in kicking off Red Ribbon Week. By working with other organizations, SADD members were able to coordinate a 5K Run Away From Drugs and a one mile Fun Run. The runs were open to the public. The Manhasset Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse showed youngsters in Manhasset, New York, that they can rock drug free. Elementary school students received paper guitars to cut out and decorate. They were asked to think about the healthy things they do for themselves, others, and/or the world. Students expressed their thoughts by drawing, painting, assembling a collage, or writing poems—all on the guitars, which were later displayed. Each group had to decide on a symbol that could be cut out of the bag to allow light to shine through. The youngsters decorated the bags with pictures of themselves doing activities in which they are a light for others. Students also made suns. Hull Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona, took Twin Day to a new level. Rather than having students pair up and dress alike, they asked them to join with even more friends to wear similar clothes. The school called it Multiplicity Day. Instead of seeing double, teachers and staff saw triple and quadruple. PAWSing To Appreciate Pets

Cornerstone Elementary School in Sugar Land, Texas, planned its Red Ribbon Week around the theme Paws-itively Drug Free. One example of the theme being carried out was Friends Helping Friends Stay Drug Free Day. Students brought in photos of themselves and their pets. The school created a display of the photos with paper paw prints in the corners and paper cutouts of animals around the edge. The display was titled Pet Pals. Wristband Rewards

Event organizers at Killybrooke Elementary School reached out to businesses in Costa Mesa, California. They developed a program in which the businesses gave special offers to students who came in wearing anti-drug bracelets during Red Ribbon Week. For example, a sub franchise gave away a free drink with the purchase of a sandwich, and a pizza restaurant offered “buy one pizza, get one free.” The school supplied its students with the bracelets on Monday morning. Parental Guidance

During Red Ribbon Week, parents with children attending Boiling Springs Elementary in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, were given homework to complete to reinforce the importance of drug awareness. One question was sent home each night, such as “How and when did Red Ribbon Week begin?” or “As a parent, what can you do to help prevent your child from using drugs?” The parents were supposed to answer each night’s question, then discuss with their child. Classrooms earned points on the parents’ homework returned to the school. The class in each grade level with the highest amount of points won a popcorn party and extra recess. Brentwood Elementary School in Plainfield, Indiana, helped students bring out their inner cartoonists. They were asked to each complete a comic strip that showed a dialogue between characters saying no to drugs. And they were given Red Ribbon Week Sparkle Foil Pencils to write with. H. B. Williams Elementary School White House, Tennessee

H. B. Williams Elementary used the theme “Go Make A Difference—Be Drug Free.” Ahead of Red Ribbon Week, a letter went home to parents explaining the concept. It was suggested that they have their children complete individual service projects, then return a slip to the school stating what was done. The letter also outlined the school-wide service project in which items were being collected for five facilities, such as shelters and a Ronald McDonald House. Each child who made a difference individually received a “driver’s license” with his or her name and activity on it. The licenses tied into the “Go” part of the theme, carried out with images of cars and handmade road signs as decorations. The road signs featured special messages, for example, “One way...the drug free way.” Also, every student created a paper vehicle with an anti-drug slogan. One morning, teachers and parents parked red vehicles in front of the school. A highlight of the week was the “Go Make A Difference—Be Drug Free Across America” parade. Some students traveled down hallways through road construction cones while others, wearing orange safety vests, directed this “traffic.” Each of our 50 states was represented by signs and costumes that showed the youngsters had done research. The students all wore Positive Promotions ribbons as well. H.B. Williams entered its activities into a county Red Ribbon Week contest and received first place in the elementary school division.

Cook Elementary Fine Arts Magnet School, Columbus, Mississippi

Cook Elementary rocked out during Red Ribbon Week! The principals, counselors, and office staff kicked off the celebration by wearing “Our School Rocks Drug Free” T-shirts. Other staff members and the students wore “A Drug Free Life Rocks” ribbons. Jwanna Gotocook, a very lively puppet, made special guest appearances on the school’s student-produced television station, telling everyone what to expect each day. The station also broadcast several students from the fourth grade performing rap songs about being drug free. The school held poster and essay contests with a rockin’ theme. In guidance classes, the student body learned songs and dances in preparation for a concert at the end of the week by D.A.R.E. officer Arthur Avant, aka Double A. Adults and children were invited to dress like rock stars for the concert. Teachers who dressed up received passes to have lunch off campus. Students with the best costumes won VIP/backstage passes, allowing them to meet Double A and have pictures taken with him. In addition to the rockin’ activities, Cook Elementary sent home notepaper it called “hugs.” Parents were asked to write notes of encouragement to their children, letting them know that they are loved too much to waste their lives on drugs. The notes were hung from one end of the school to the other, “hugging” the building with positive thoughts from the families.

Children’s Community School, Waterbury, Connecticut

Children’s Community School specializes in working with students from low-income families who are socially, environmentally, or academically disadvantaged. For this school, Red Ribbon Week is part of a whole drug prevention month. In 2009, organizers chose “Drug Free I Can Be Anything I Want To Be” as the overall theme. Students designed posters illustrating this concept; the best posters were displayed on a bulletin board with fall leaves and the words “ Don’t Fall For Drugs,” Every door had a sign stating, “Close The Door On Drugs,” and the trashcans had signs proclaiming, “Drugs Are Garbage.” On Friday, children participated in a carnival featuring numerous stations. For example, “Moving Away From Drugs” included potato sack races and musical chairs. “Don’t Throw Your Life Away On Drugs” involved throwing beanbags. In “Fishing For Better Things To Do Than Drugs,” youngsters caught laminated fish that gave healthy suggestions. The school used “Believe, Achieve, Succeed Drug Free” bracelets, stickers, and dog tags throughout the week.

The philosophy behind Red Ribbon Week at Keystone Heights Elementary is that by becoming a person of good character, someone will have decision making skills and will be able to say no to peer pressure and drugs. The week was celebrated by learning six character traits: respect, believing in yourself, honesty, a positive attitude, making good decisions, and responsibility. The staff dressed as superheroes of character. Students received quotes about character, and throughout the week the principal picked two quotes at a time to read. The students with those quotes won stickers. Classes wore camouflage to show that you can try to hide yourself, but you can’t hide great character. Students were told, “Choose a career, not drugs” at Berta Weathersbee Elementary in LaGrange, Georgia. The school merged Career Awareness Week with Red Ribbon Week. Each day, members of the community spoke about their careers. On Wednesday, the visitors brought vehicles; city of
LaGrange workers came with trucks and other equipment. The students also got to investigate a state patrol car, a UPS truck, a police squad car, a fire truck, and a park ranger patrol boat. “Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It” Educational Activities Books and “Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It” Pencils combine an anti-drug message with goal setting and would fit perfectly with a career week.

In Harvard, Illinois, Jefferson Elementary School wanted to “Wipe out drugs!” Students were asked to bring in paper products to be donated to the Harvard Food Pantry. The wish list included unopened packages of tissues, paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, and paper plates. The classroom that brought in the most items won an ice cream party. Dogs and being drug free went together like peanut butter and jelly at Acmetonia Primary School in Cheswick, Pennsylvania. On Monday of Red Ribbon Week, students pledged to stay free of drugs and received “PAWS”-itively Drug Free” Dog Tags. Then on Tuesday, a trained therapy dog named Brody came to Acmetonia. He walked through each classroom wearing a homemade vest that said “PAWS”-itively No Drugs” on one side and “Keep your tail out of jail” on the other. In Humble, Texas, Oak Forest Elementary School joined the fight against drugs. Students and teachers arrived in camouflage clothing on Friday of Red Ribbon Week. A military sergeant led the school through a drug awareness boot camp. The event started with an address to the “recruits.” Then they participated in a call and response activity. Next came cadences. Exercise drills, such as jumping jacks and pushups, got everyone moving. Each day of Red Ribbon Week at Kenwood Station Elementary School in Crestwood, Kentucky, had a different, but related, focus. On Monday, students pledged to be PAWS-itively healthy and signed pledge stickers. Tuesday, they dressed up as professionals and discussed being PAWS-itively successful in life. Wednesday, the youngsters wrote drug refusal statements on paw prints and showed they were PAWS-itively born to be drug free. “Rock To A Drug Free Beat” was the theme at Morrill Elementary School in Morrill, Nebraska. Students practiced multiple anti-drug songs for Red Ribbon Week. Each day, the school’s counselor hid a trophy shaped like a guitar on top. Whoever found it won prizes for his or her whole class, such as bubble-filled guitars. In Cabot, Arkansas, Eastside Elementary School students can live happily ever after. Hull Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona, took Twin Day to a new level. Rather than having students pair up and dress alike, they asked them to join with even more friends to wear similar clothes. Honoring veterans during Red Ribbon Week is becoming more popular. “Heroes Are Drug Free” Theme Day Stickers and “Real Heroes Are Drug Free!” Patriotic Silicone Bracelets were created with this in mind. Mesnier Primary School in St. Louis, Missouri, expanded the concept. The school’s Character Crew interviewed one hero a day and broadcast the video to the students. The heroes included a veteran, soldier, police officer, firefighter, and school nurse. Students worked on banners and flags with the theme “Real Heroes Are Drug Free” to be waved during an indoor parade. These youngsters lined the hallways while 100 heroes, many in uniform, paraded through the school. Parents, children’s everyday heroes, were part of the group being honored.

Event organizers at Killybrooke Elementary School reached out to businesses in Costa Mesa, California. They developed a program in which the businesses gave special offers to students who came in wearing anti-drug bracelets during Red Ribbon Week. Madison Creek Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week in a “sweet way.” The school created a life-size, interactive game called Drug Free Land, modeled after Candy Land. Oversized “candy canes” lined the walkway outside, huge “lollipops” decorated the lawn and a mural of the game hung above the front doors. More than 600 students pledged to stay away from drugs by signing and decorating paper cutouts of gingerbread men, which lined the entryway. Inside, the walls were covered in blue and green paper to resemble the background of Candy Land. Colored posterboard was used for the spaces in the game. Along this path, there were three unhealthy stops and three healthy stops. In each of these areas, students performed skits to teach game players about choices.

The first people to go through the game were judges of a countywide decorating contest. They arrived to find several hundred students, faculty, staff, and parents playing board games
in the parking lot, dressed in red and wearing Positive Promotions stickers. After the judges made their way through Drug Free Land, they ended up in the school’s gym, which had been transformed into Camarena’s Clubhouse. The clubhouse featured red balloons and a Positive Promotions banner. Red and white confetti came raining down, and students sang a song about being drug free. The school won the decorating contest.

Vineyard Elementary School

The student body teamed up against drugs at Vineyard Elementary. The school held five dress-up days, with the last one involving uniforms from sports teams and other activities. Students signed football-shaped pledge cards and taped them to a paper goalpost in the cafeteria that read “It is our goal to be drug free.” Also, classrooms teamed up against each other in a poster contest. Winners received free bowling and a Jamba Juice party.

Throughout the week, special guests visited the school. Olympic
silver medalist Gina Miles shared her goals and encouraged everyone to stay away from drugs. Members of a college soccer team spoke about having a healthy lifestyle and entertained the audience with some fancy footwork. The team handed out mini kickballs from Positive Promotions. A sheriff’s deputy made an appearance and pulled the winning ticket in a drawing; he awarded the grand prize of a roller skating party as well as a Positive Promotions water bottle and high flyer disc. The high school’s football team taught the elementary children a rally chant and the cheer squad performed a drug free cheer. They said they couldn’t play football or be cheerleaders if on drugs.

The theme at Callahan Elementary was “Making Strides To Lead A Drug Free And Healthy Lifestyle.” Giant footprints decorated the hallway floors. The footprints had anti-drug slogans, such as “Drugs Will Get You Nowhere.” Smaller footprints adorned the front entrance, water fountains and lunchroom windows. Students were advised to make footprints worth following. The week started with a school spirit assembly. The next day the school turned red; classes with 100% of students wearing red received Positive Promotions stickers and wristbands. For “Walk Away From Drugs Day,” students spent their 30-minute recess on the PE track. Some children participated in foot races while others counted their steps with pedometers. Everyone received “Drug Free: The Healthy Way To Be” bookmarks. Later in the week, students and teachers made more strides against drugs by marching in a character book parade.

Due to the national elections, Holy Trinity chose red, white and blue for Red Ribbon Week. One of the favorite events was “Dress-Up Your Teacher Day.” Students brought in red clothing and accessories to put on their teachers. Surprise children with a trackless party train for Red Ribbon Week. The kid-sized trains can be rented and arrive with a “conductor” who does the operating. Westfield Central School in Westfield, New York, declared its resistance to drugs in a slightly different manner. Pawnee Heights Elementary in Burdett, Kansas, capitalized on the popularity of a current game show to reach students. The school acted out “Deal Or No Deal” using paper briefcases. The “contestant” chose a case, then was shown the contents of other cases opened by students playing the “models,” such as an X-Box or laptop computer. The “banker” tempted her with things like looking cool by smoking and freedom from stress with beer. The contestant stayed strong and kept her own case until the very end, a case which held “a long, healthy, happy life.” Your students could reenact this game, too. Combating the drug epidemic will take a united effort, especially from parents. Organize a presentation for them. Martin Walker Elementary School in Copperas Cove, Texas, had a police detective speak. He talked about several drugs and their effects on the body. He gave clues to identify drugs in the home and told parents the signs that might indicate their children are using drugs. At Merrill Road Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida, students traced and cut out hand shapes on black paper and green paper. On the black hands, they wrote unhealthy activities, such as doing drugs or smoking. On the green hands, they wrote healthy activities, such as exercising or eating vegetables. The school’s PTA made a stunted black tree trunk and a strong brown trunk. They added the hand “leaves” and labeled the trees unhealthy and healthy. The trees created a great visual statement. “Drug Free, The Healthy Way To Be” Educational Activities Books would be useful for giving students ideas for the leaves. “Drug Free, The Healthy Way To Be” Temporary Tattoos could be good reinforcement of the lesson.

At Cowpens Elementary School in Cowpens, South Carolina, teachers and students dressed as friendly clowns. They wanted to communicate “Don’t clown around with drugs.” The students and staff paraded around outside with anti-drug banners. Then the best clowns were chosen. Many people plan a night out on the town. In Aurora, Illinois, relatives of students at Homestead Elementary were encouraged to have a Family Night In. The night was designed for staying home and spending time together. Some suggested activities were reading, playing games, cooking a special meal, carving pumpkins, and hanging up fall decorations. Afterwards, when students returned slips of paper saying how their families spent the night, they were entered in a drawing for prizes. Hans Herr Elementary School in Lampeter, Pennsylvania, turned to music to make its Red Ribbon Week a success. Organizers wanted students to “tune out drugs.” Pledge posters said “We promise to march to a drug free beat” and showed a marching band drummer. Children signed the posters, which were placed outside each classroom. Every morning, a gong rung over the loudspeaker. This got everyone’s attention for a mini lesson about drugs. A musical presentation always followed the lessons. These presentations consisted of performances by band members, the instrumental teacher, the band director, and chorus members. The Lions Club of Truckee, California, sponsored a bumper sticker contest. The group challenged students at Alder Creek Middle School to create anti-drug, tobacco, or alcohol words and artwork. The students were limited to a 3" x 11" size.The winning design became an actual bumper sticker. The first-place contestant received a $100 savings bond, second-place $75, and third-place $50. The prizes were plentiful during Red Ribbon Week in Big Lake, Texas. Each day at Reagan County Elementary School, a counselor drew the names of 30 students who had participated in Red Ribbon Week activities. These students won prizes purchased from Positive Promotions. One of the qualifying activities was a Red Ribbon Roundup. This involved youngsters wearing Western clothes. Red Ribbon Week has made its way into Belmont Pines Hospital, a behavioral health facility in Youngstown, Ohio. Youth patients were asked to each pick a celebrity who has a chemical dependency issue. Their assignment was to first learn about these troubled stars (staff provided articles), then write letters to them. Patients wrote how they felt and what a role model should be like. Acting out situations can be a great teaching tool. At Blue Ridge Elementary in Ararat, Virginia, sixth and seventh graders chose scenarios, created by law enforcement, to re-enact. The reenactments taught consequences of illegal activities. Students “caught” using alcohol and drugs or selling drugs were arrested and handcuffed. They appeared before the magistrate; some made bail, some went on trial, some went to jail. Students who “overdosed” were rushed to the emergency room where the Ararat Rescue Squad was waiting. Not all of the students could be revived. After the scenarios had been played out, the students received gifts, such as water bottles and dog tags. This year, “I Elect To Be Drug Free” Water Bottles and “I Elect To Be Drug Free” Dog Tags would be particularly fitting.

Panama Elementary School in Panama, Oklahoma, decided on the theme “Dance through life drug free” to let kids know that they can find things to do, such as dancing, that keep their minds and bodies fit and active (see picture on page 17). Then they won’t get caught up in something dangerous, such as drugs. The celebration week started with doing the twist in the gym while wearing pajamas and slippers. On Tuesday, students dressed up like their favorite types of dancers. The whole school took a break to dance that afternoon. Wednesday included classroom dance contests. The winners got to perform at Friday’s assembly, which also featured demonstrations by a dance instructor. First and second grade classes at Brookhaven Academy in Brookhaven, Missouri discussed how saying no to drugs shows respect for teachers, parents, friends, and themselves. Then they fashioned spectacles out of pipe cleaners. This eyewear was called “re-spectacles.” The students used the “re-spectacles” to spot people showing respect.
